According to russian news sites, Perelman picks mushrooms
in woods near St. Petersburg and doesn't want to be disturbed.
There was a wild rumour that Perelman was worried about coming
into a lot of money, in case the Russian Mafia kidnapped his aged
mother and held her to ransom.
I can't imagine why, as with someone that famous and such an
adornment to Russia if the mafia did try anything they'd probably
find half the St Petersburg police force and a bunch of Spetsnatz
on their tails.
BTW, as a piece of trivia, one of the other winners, Wendelin
Werner, appeared at the age of 12 in a French film called
"La Passante du Sans-Souci". So I guess he has a Bacon
number, as well as probably an Erdos number.
