Robert Hooke was a weak mathematician. While Hooke made some valuable
suggestions to Newton, it was Newton doing four hours of sleep a night
for 18 months who came up with the theory in all its grand detail.

Newton had to invent calculus and differential equations to do the
deed. Hooke did not have the mathematical talent to do it. Credit to
Hooke for suggesting to Newton that the motion of planets is the
combination of a tangential velocity and and inward pointing force.
But that is the merest outline of the idea. Newton did the details so
he gets most of the credit.

Sounds like we've got ourselves the makings of another conspiracy theory
here, boys!
