Original donuts _were_ topologically spherical. I guess the shift to a
toroidal shape was to increase volume while maintaining a high surface
to volume ratio.
Some doughnuts are still spherical (but not topological spherical):-
e.g. Jam doughnuts consist of a blob of jam enclosed inside a
superficially spherical ball of doughnut material.
Some varieties (sometimes sold as "American" doughnuts) are toroidal and
very plain, apart from lots of sugar.
