Re: Help with an Algebra Problem

I apoligize after posting I realized that the book read 1.50 cents not
$1.50 I didn't know how to edit or delete my orignal post.

I am using Practical Business Math Procedures 8E by Jeffrey Slater.
The problem in question is number 11, of Chapter 5. The answer is in
the back of the book.

Thanks,
Shawn

Hi all,

I know that what I am about to post doesn't come close to matching the
other posts in this group, but this problem is driving me nuts.

I know that the answer is $1.50 because it shows in the back of the
book I am studying from; however, I cannot for the life of me figure
out the steps it took to arrive at the answer. I am going to post the
question and if someone could show me the steps to solve it, I would
greatly appreciate it.

On September 19, 2005, the Minneapolis Star Tribune compared the price
of Glad wrap to Press 'n Seal. A roll of Glad wrap sells for $2.99. A
roll of Press 'n Seal sells for $3.79 or 5 cents a square foot. Press
'n Seal sells for 10/3 times as much per square foot as Glad wrap.
What is the price of Glad Wrap per square foot?

I'm new to this forum, so I'm not sure whether there is a protocol
discouraging people from simply answering homework assignments for
others.

Let me simply suggest that the right answer is not $1.50. Glad wrap
does not cost a buck fifty per square foot.

The first hint is that you should be able to reject this answer without
doing much math. One of the products costs 5 cents per square foot. if
the right answer is 1.50 per square foot it means the Glad Wrap is
1.50/.05= or 30 times as expensive as the Press 'n Seal. This ought to
strike you as unlikely.

The second hint is that you have the right answer, but the decimal
point is in the wrong place.

Please try again, or convince me that I'm not doing your homework, and
I'll give the whole answer, although I bet you can figure it out now.
