Why do we use the notation R[x]?
Reading through Hungerford's Algebra text, when discussing polynomial
rings, he promises an explanation for this notation "below", but I have
read through the section(s) and see no such explanation.
Just curious if anyone could tell me why this notation is used for the
polynomial ring over R.
