Hi all,
I am currently in the process of applying for a PhD in Number Theory. I
am a Canadian, and currently doing a Master's at Univ. of Waterloo. I
am trying to narrow down my selection to less than about 10 schools
(should I apply to even more?)
Suggestion: check the descendency of the faculty at your favorite
school's math departments. Compare the resulting profile with your
likeliihood of acceptance.

development of research level mathematics and from all individuals who

Poking around their database I discovered that Brown and Wisconsin
listed 5 doctorates specializing in number theory while Texas listed
11. Jeffrey Vaaler, Ph.D. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
1974 listed 20 descendants--presumably not all in number theory.
Good luck.
