Hi all,
I am currently in the process of applying for a PhD in Number Theory. I
am a Canadian, and currently doing a Master's at Univ. of Waterloo. I
am trying to narrow down my selection to less than about 10 schools
(should I apply to even more?). However, I find it difficult to gauge
my chances of acceptance at the various US schools. My advisor noted
that he would not be able to write me a top-notch letter (ie one good
enough to get me into a top 5 type school), since he doesn't know my
work that well yet (I've only been working with him about 2 months, and
he's been away a lot this semester with other commitments). What are
some other good places in number theory (this is more important to me
than overall program breadth). I'm considering applying to the
following places:
Wisconsin
Brown
Illinois - Urbana
Texas
Michigan
Princeton (Seems out of react...)
All these places seem fantastic, but perhaps I should also apply to
some lower ranked places. Any suggestions? I have been referring to the
USNews 2007 rankings so far. How dependable is that source?
I know a professor,Joshph Silverman,is in Brown University now.
He does many good reasearches in Elliptic Curves and Number Theory.
If you want to major in Number Theory,I think he is one of the good
professors you can choose.
Good luck!
Fernando
