People coming in with Google Groups can rate posts, and I'd like more

What's in it for us?

Already today as I look through threads trying to figure out who to
reply to, I've noted ratings.

I thank those who have begun ratings, and assure you that I will try to
use that information to help me in choosing what issues to address, and
as for benefits, they can be huge.

If ratings start being used on the newsgroups to send a message to
posters, those of you who don't want to get in flame wars with some
poster who annoys you, may get a lot of progress out of a group effort
that sends the message to those who believe they are entertaining and
brilliant in their postings--when they are neither.

Sure, I won't stop if you all down-rate me to the bottom level, as for
me it IS about the math, and I am a man on a mission, but I do pay
attention to ratings of my own posts, and that may impact how I post,
if I see a value in that in moving this situation forward.

You may be surprised to find that thin-skinnned posters who are
persistent when they feel no consequences as normally the only way to
express displeasure is to post some kind of reply, will run when they
see they are ranked very low by readers of the group using ratings.

It'll also lessen the power of three or four people to dominate threads
by replying a lot in support of each other, as they will only get three
or four votes, and if there are hundreds of other people down-rating
their posts, then posters who may otherwise choose to reply to them in
dumb flame wars, can know they can be safely ignored as sci.math
expresses its actual group opinion.

Lots of benefits if people get in the habit. Few negatives for people
using Google Groups anyway as it's so easy to just click a rating after
you read through a post.
