On JSH's ExtremeMathematics Google Group, this showed up today:
Subject: Sabotage!
From: jstevh@xxxxxxx
Date: Fri, Nov 24 2006 4:23 pm
A member of the sci.math newsgroup managed to get past my
screening and join the group, revealing himself when he
systematically down rated all of my posts.
I have banned that person from the group.
It shows you how these people operated.

Looks like people not members of the group can rate posts so I was
wrong on that point.
(He hasn't deleted the OP ... yet.)
As shown by a group of sci.math'ers who came in to downrate my posts.
Still, it shows how these people operate.
There was other evidence the banned person was a hostile sci.math'er
so I'm comfortable with the decision to ban that person.
Did anyone here actually attempt to join his group?
Rupert mentioned that James refused to let him join. And Rupert is still as
pleasant to James as is humanly possible to remain <0.5 wink>. I don't know
of others.
I haven't tried. I joined some other group (Yahoo? hard to remember) near
the start of my Surrogate Factoring addiction, and told him (quite
truthfully!) at the time that I'm very open to the idea that an efficient
(poly-time) factoring algorithm /may/ exist. It was pretty much a
James-only group. I recall that some poor guy from India joined looking for
real help with factoring, and for some reason wasn't able to get the
then-current piles of quadratic equations working efficiently for himself
;-) In fact ... yup, that's the only non-James poster I recall from that
group.
It might be funny if someone created a new Google account and tried
to join it. (Of course, now JSH will be paranoid about this possibility
and not let any new people into his group. He sinks deeper and
deeper ...)
I'm much more a fan of live and let live. When he pisses in my living room,
sometime I piss on him in return, but so long as he relieves himself in his
own living room I couldn't care less.
I do wish Google would allow you to only let group members rate
posts, as I think their Beta still needs a bit more options for
group wners, as this current ongoing sabotage by members of the
sci.math newsgroup shows.
So make it a totally private group, James. People can't rate what they
can't see. So long as the public is allowed to see what's there, the public
has a right to rate it however they wish.
For example, the Dark Cabal's group is totally private -- you don't even
know the name of it, and it's never mentioned on sci.math. Only top
mathematicians and their lackey running-dog agents know its name ;-)
The juvenile behavior from members of the Usenet sci.math group
reveals a clear weakness in Google's current setup.
But people giving a post 1 star generally believe that post /is/ worthless.
If the intent were to give you a way to stroke your own ego, they'd let you
rate your own posts, and multiple times to boot.
The plain fact is that if you're not getting posts rated above 1 star, there
really aren't a significant number of Google Group users who find enough
merit in your posted work to click on a "higher" star.
Well, if he hadn't pointed it out, then this thread wouldn't have
been started, and the fact that "outsiders" can rate posts wouldn't
have gotten out, and I (for one) wouldn't have tried it out ...
JSH shooting himself in the foot again.
Yup! Even more ironic: if you didn't have to be a member to post there, I
would have posted my original note to James there instead. I'm afraid that
when The Hammer comes, he's going to crush himself to death with it before
anyone else even suspects ;-)
