I don't understand the wording/reasoning of the following question.
Q: Saplings are to be plantwed 30 feet apart along one side of a
straight lane 455 feet long. If the first sapling is to be planted at
one end of the lane, how many saplings are needed?
a. 18 b. 16 c. 15(1/6) d. 15 e. 14
First, will be at 0 ft. or at the beginning, and since there are 455
ft, I figured, I will divide 455 by 30.
which gives me 15(5/30). which is 15(1/6) Obviously you can't have 1/6
sapling, and since you have to be spaced 30 ft apart, you need 15
saplings.
but no... it says I need 16 saplings.. what's the reasoning for this?
If you take a 12 inch ruler, how many inch markers are there? Not 12, but 13
ie 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12
If one excludes the marks at either end, there would only be 11 marks.
With these type of questions, it always helps to do a diagram should
represent the situation.
