If you are a windows user, you should check out proTeXt:

http://www.tug.org/protext/

It will guide you through installation of LaTeX and also TeXnicCenter,
which is what I use to write documents, and I have found it to be very
good.

A nice introduction to the basics of using LaTeX can be found here:
