this fish to the penguins:
How do I get started with Latex? I need a compiler (the Tex or Latex
software) and an editing program, right? What are some examples of
free programs, which are both decent and easy to understand, located
online? Thanks.
There is a latex newsgroup (forgot its name) precisely for this sort
of questions.
Anyway, MikTex (google for it) is a good free distro of LaTeX for
windows. In connection with it, you may want a good text editor. I use
WinEdit which is not free but is not expensive either. Free text
editors exist by the tens or hundreds. I also use jedit but for other
purposes not related to LaTeX-ing.
In linux land there are plenty of choices. People swear by emacs or
vi(m). I like neither, but truth be told, I have not tried to bend my
mind around them. A full LaTeX environment (as the above mentioned
editors) comes packaged with every decent linux distro - or you can
easily download them.
Best regards,
G. Rodrigues
