Thanks for the double talk. There is a really offensive thread going
on right now, by the title of "fucking". I note that someone has given
the OP a single star, but no one has come out to say that the thread
was out of place and downright filthy. On the other hand this crazy
person is just inviting people to think, believing perhaps that
Mathematicians are thinking people, about the possibility that a book
that has so many statements that can be verified as true may well be
from God. All I am saying is that if you do not have affinity towards
Islam, do not read the stuff. Why make all that fuss about its being
out of place or off topic?
Because it's out of place and off-topic?
I've been a bit annoyed at the steady stream of Islamic posts. They
are being posted with a wide variety of misleading subject and from
lines, so that the killfile is not a practical option. This is rather
more annoying than a single offtopic, even vulgar, thread, in my
opinion.
That said, I haven't bothered to complain about his behavior, since
I'm sure it will do no good. (Neither will your suggestions that he
change his posting habits.) But I don't agree with your claim that
unless Mathman complains equally about every offtopic post, he
forfeits his right to complain about any of them.
There is another reason why I Jump in on these occasions. You see in
the scriptures there are many stories that tell that just before a
community faced the wrath of God there were warners who were ridiculed
and persecuted for bringing in the message of God and disturbing the
merrymaking. So, my friend I act out of concern for your well being.
Merrymaking? On sci.math? You have a very liberal sense of "merry".
Almost as liberal as your sense of "persecuted". Mathman very
reasonably criticized the poster for the stream of offtopic posts. I
doubt that this act is comparable to the persecutions in the stories
you mention.
Whatever your motives, these posts don't really belong on this
newsgroup. I should think that you would be more annoyed at the
boorish behavior of this poster (or group) than most, since it
reflects badly (rightly or not) on adherents to your faith.
His proselytizing is not likely to win any converts. Instead, it is
an annoyance, well-intentioned or not. And one may expect that this
annoyance transfers to the religion and its believers instead of just
to the anonymous poster. Now, of course, the fact that one Muslim is
a bit of a jerk shouldn't influence one's opinions on the religion.
But that's a more likely outcome than that sci.math readers convert en
masse.
