You do have a point there, and I must admit posting a quip in the
thread you mentioned.
The problem is most posters who start threads like that are utterly
incorrigible, and to complain would be like water off a duck's back.
In fact most of those kinds of posters are what are called trolls,
whose only goal is to elicit replies and stir up discord. So the
best way to discourage them is to ignore them.
Generally the only time it makes sense to rebuke a poster
(such as your well-expressed reply to "The Lantern") is if it
seems there is any chance they will listen.
Otherwise you're only wasting your time and playing into their
hands, or at best letting off steam with little prospect of any
result!
So, paradoxically, on that basis, mathman's reply wasn't
"picking on" one person and ignoring others more deserving
of censure, but trying to reason with someone who might
have a bit more sense than an idiot troll.
