Suppose you drive your car into a wall at the rate of 50 mph. Would the
damage to the car depend on whether you were accelarating to 50 mph verus
a constant speed of 50 mph? What if there was no running engine on inpact?
if it was a rear engine rear wheel drive then the car would continue to
drive forward as you hit thus doing more damage.
More damage in the order of accelerating, flat speed, free wheeling. this
said I don't think it would be much more damage.
The same would hold for front engine front drive but it is all a matter of
when the engine fails.
Looking at it another way, the engine is creating kinetic energy which has
to be dissipated somehow in the crash.

Well, if the engine light, oil light, air bag sensor light and some little red light that I don't know what it is for came on, there is engine damage!!! ... So, we are over $100 on the rental car, not mentioning the gas that I had to put in it - nice ride, cool car, only 15mpg!! ...
