Definitions Needed

I studied algebra and calculus in high school. The words were
never defined except by example.

In *lay* terms:

What is the definition of the word "algebra"?
What is the definition of the word "calculus"?
What is *an* algebra?
What is *a* calculus?

I have tried Web searches, but it is too easy to get stuck, and
there is a lot of nonsense to boot.

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko
