I studied algebra and calculus in high school. The words were
never defined except by example.

In *lay* terms:

What is the definition of the word "algebra"?
What is the definition of the word "calculus"?
What is *an* algebra?
What is *a* calculus?

I have tried Web searches, but it is too easy to get stuck, and
there is a lot of nonsense to boot.

Sincerely,

Quoting from Wikipedia:

Algebra is a branch of mathematics concerning the study of structure,
relation and quantity. The name is derived from the treatise written by the
Muslim mathematician Muhammad bin Musa al-Khwarizmi titled (in Arabic ????
????? ????????? ) Al-Kitab al-Jabr wa-l-Muqabala (meaning "The Compendious
Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing"), which provided symbolic
operations for the systematic solution of linear and quadratic equations.

I hope this is helpful. -Bill
