Sorry. Well, I think I'm having a problem with algebra here. I
couldn't manage to start from these two equations and reach p² - ap.
How do I do it?

Update: managed to find p^2 - ap, by squaring both members of equation
x + y = 2 p - a.

This solves the problem as p - a. Is this correct?

Correct.
