Re: What's with the solution manuals?

A few years ago, I noticed that my students' homework answers were sometimes
looking a lot like those from solution manuals, so I stopped assigning
problems from textbooks to be turned in for credit. I now pass out
homework assignments on handouts, containing problems that I make up
myself.
In the classes I teach for the math majors, I do have them keep a journal in
which they are to record the work they do on problems from the book, but I
do not grade those.
So I've been disappointed but not surprised to see this on sci.math. And
it's probably the tip of the iceberg.
