For the record, in high school I took Algebra I as a freshman
and then Geometry, Algebra II and Senior Math (trig and topics)
as a sophomore. Without Alg II already behind me, the beginning
of Senior Math had a couple snags, but they weren't bad snags.
That's what I did, except they let me omit Algebra II entirely.
I also knew exactly what was covered in Algebra II because I
_asked_ the older students when I was a freshman, I had
also gotten a copy of the text from a teacher when I took
Algebra I, and I worked through it myself. In my case, I think
going to a smaller school helped (approx. 500 students for
4 years of high school). For one thing, no one was all that
unaware (as the original poster appears to be) of what was
covered in the Algebra II course -- it was a junior level
class, so you heard all about it from the juniors, just like
you'd hear all about (at my school) how hard 10'th grade World
History was and how easy 10'th grade Biology was from the
sophomores, how hard 11'th grade Chemistry was and how easy
11'th grade American History was from the juniors, etc.
Also, there's no way a student at my school (back when I
was in school) could have taken a community college placement
test and then shown the results to our Guidance Counselor
without the math teachers knowing about it. News traveled
fast in our school! Faster then, in the mid 1970s without
the internet than now with the internet, I'd be willing
to bet. Most of the students at my school have known about
it within a few hours after you went to the first higher
level class too, since only one or two students from
each grade level took a more advanced class (Algebra II
as a sophomore, physics as a junior, etc.).
