Ahmadinejad was asked why he thinks more research should be done on
the Holocaust. His rambling answer included the following remarks,
which appear to be a reference to Godel's theorems.
"We had principles in mathematics that were granted to be absolute in
mathematics for over 800 years. But new science has gotten rid of
those absolutisms, come forward other different logics of looking at
mathematics and sort of turned the way we look at it as a science
altogether after 800 years. "
After his presidency is over (if he survives) he'll embark on a new
career posting to sci.math.
Although I did not follow the Iranian president's remarks fully (!),
and as you suggest they would not be out of place in sci.math,
I wonder if they do reflect an emphasis on mathematical education in Iran?
I was very surprised at the IMC (International Competition in Mathematics)
contest in the Ukraine last year, which I attended,
that a university in Teheran came first (or maybe second),
in the face of competition from leading colleges around the world.
