Go back to William Elliot. A curmdeon after my own heart but he knows his math.

"curmdeon" , what does it mean?

That word was misspelled. The correct spelling is "curmudgeon"
From dictionary.com: a bad-tempered, difficult, cantankerous person

But often, the curmudgeon has a tender side that is being masked with a false front of nastiness. Since Mr. Elliot frequently helps posters with their questions, he would likely fall into this category and not simply bad-tempered, difficult, or cantankerous (in fact, I cannot recall him displaying those attributes, but I have not read that many of his posts).
