Thanks for all the helpful comments.

Am I going to have to edit and remove the "Re: " from every message
I reply to (as I just did with this message)? Or will the killfiles
permit the "-- " even when it's not the first 3 characters?

I'll change the wording to say that the "-- " need only be typed
for a new thread.

Perhaps include some discussion in the FAQ as to how to quote replies.

topic ....

Does anybody know one?

2. The title should show what is in your message.

You may as well be explicit, and add "Preferably include enough
information so that the field of mathematics under discussion is
clear."

A good idea.

I'll try to indicate that briefly.

I suggest that the new FAQ include a link to the old FAQ, despite its age:

<http://www.cs.uwaterloo.ca/~alopez-o/math-faq/math-faq.html>

Doing so should, at least in theory, reduce the number of questions about
whether 0.999... = 1 and such....

I slightly prefer the (alt.algebra/help> FAQ, but there's no harm
in mentioning both.

I also agree with another posters suggestion that there should be a proper
mathematical FAQ....

Fine! My present attempt is just a modest advisory message which
I'm willing to post to <sci.math> from time to time. If something
better comes along, I'll stop.
