Why does multiplying two negative numbers create a postive number? Is
it just a law of arithmetic ? I am struggling to find an intuitive

My daughter came up with this one...maybe after a high school
experiment on specific heat...
She visualized the result of starting with a beaker of warm water, and
then inserting (+), or removing (-), either hot (+) or cold (-) blocks
of metal.
Adding hot blocks makes the final result warmer than it would be.
Removing blocks of cold metal also makes the result warmer...QED
Your point being...?
