It doesn't seem unlikely to me that these Erdos-Woods numbers
show up in the book of K. Lakkis, which I suppose he wrote indeed.
All we have to do now: Find this book! And tell Neil Sloane about
it.
And tell sci.math about it, if/when you find it. It must be possible
to search some big library catalogues online. It is possible that
the book is written in Greek, or German, as most of his papers
are in German.
Having searched for quite a while (an interesting job, but not
an easy one - how to search for books in Greek?) without
success, I did something really natural and what Sherlock Holmes
would have done himself. As I knew that Konstantin Lakkis was
professor at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki in 1999, I wrote
there yesterday and received two friendly answers already. One
of the answers stems from a former student of him. She promised
to talk to K. Lakkis these days when he would visit the university
as he usually still does.
The book by Konstantin Lakkis was first published in 1979 and
re-published in 1984. It is written in Greek and has never become
translated into English or German. My next step now was to ask
about the relation between this book and the Erdos-Woods numbers
whose sequence http://www.research.att.com/~njas/sequences/A059756
triggered my search for the book. The very remark there is:
K. Lakki: Number Theory. 1984
[I would like more information about this reference! - njas]
I have never heard of these Erdos-Woods numbers before but this
happily has changed now. And I am quite sure that through the contact
to Prof. emeritus Konstantin Lakkis there will be soon more
information also, regarding the other question of Neil Sloane:
Alan R. Woods, Thesis, 1981
[I would like more information about this reference! - njas]
The order of years (Thesis 1981, Book 1984) suggests a deeper
connection. It's great fun to explore the information jungle :-)
