It seems that a reasonable solution to the spam problem in Google
Groups is for Google to allow groups to be set up so that all posts to
the group are filtered through gmail's e-mail spam filter, which seems
to be pretty good at eliminating spam from e-mail. For groups that
have an owner, the owner could be in charge of turning on the spam
filtering for the group. If there are groups with no owners,
subscribers could petition an administrator at Google who could make
the change if it seems reasonable. That would allow groups like ours
to get rid of most of it, without adding much to Google's workload in
providing Google Groups. Postings submitted within Google Groups would
be rejected if they don't pass the spam filter. Postings submitted
elsewhere would be filtered before being archived in Google Groups.
Thus, Google Groups would not be badmouthed for being a source or
distributor of spam.
I wish I knew how to suggest this to Google.
Possibly here? :-
