Actually, Google benefits from usenet spam in a hidden way ...
It pushes people away from usenet.
Google Groups is a _competitor_ to usenet, as well as being a usenet
gateway.
The idea from Google's point of view is simple ...
Setting up new Google Groups is easier than setting up a new usenet
Group. You have a problem with all the spam on usenet? Google's
response would be to suggest that you create a moderated _non-usenet_
Google Group.
In other words, the demise of usenet does not imply the demise of
Google Groups. Moderated _non-usenet_ Google Groups represent Google's
proprietary solution to the problem (and the beginning of the end of
true free speech).
