The lack of a formula in chess does not mean that it's
nonmathematical. Geometry isn't all formulas...logic isn't all
formulas...
Chess is very mathematical, inasmuch as mathematics is a study of
patterns.
Mathematics can require effort. If one disagrees, he has only to try
proving Goldbach's Conjecture. Bobby Fischer might not have been a
mathematician in the ordinary sense, but chess computers do crunch
quite a few numbers--and examine quite a few patterns.
