I use Gnus, but it's not a particularly popular newsclient. There are
plenty of others around, including text-based (slrn is supposed to be
good) and GUI-based. I prefer nice, simple text interfaces, but you
may have other needs.

Maybe there needs to be an entirely new protocol that has some "error"
correction.

Anytime you create a protocol that allows easy communication with
thousands of people, spam will be a problem. I don't see how you'll
fix it without either a moderator. Or maybe an evil bit (see RFC
3514).
