In my case, yes. In high school I got staright A's in geometry
while simultaneously flunking Spanish.

Not necessarily. Mathematics can be more than the sum of it's parts.

The sum of it's parts. (Note, I never got to the stage of reading
Spanish literature, couldn't make my way to the station.)
