Dear Newsgroup:
I believe Newsgroups should not allow unknown names to be used in the
media, for greater public trust in our scientific debates.
First, you're going to have to get every ISP and every
e-mail provider to stop issuing accounts to every
anonymous user. Fat chance of pushing that through.
I believe the administrators of newsgroups should request some
information about the writers upon registration.
All that information IS registered. If you want to see
any of it, you'll need a subpeona. This is the USA, not
some third world shithole where the government can do
what it pleases. You'll just have to get used to it
or go back where you came from.
They can provide secure sites for collecting the information, such as
address, SSN, education, etc.
It is appropriate to request about professional background of writers.
No, it is not appropriate.
What I mean, is that these information are confidential, only the
users name such as John Doe will be surfaced on the postings.
Right. And once you know a person's real name,
you can discover their employer and send them
harrassing e-mail or show up at their front door
with an AK-47.
Have you ever had anyone send you an e-mail with
a virus attached? It's not funny and there's no
limit to what assholes can get up to.
This is essential for the health of these debates.
No, it's not. Appeal to authority is a fallacy.
The truth of mathematics is self-evident, there
is no need for credentials. Except for ivory-tower
egoists who want to suppress legitimate debate.
Does the shoe fit?
For example posters using the names like m8C27, Cindy, Tom, etc.
might use obscenity or offensive words without any further personal
consequences.
Why should there be consequences? Are you a NAZI?
We are not dealing with ghosts, we are dealing with peoples.
You SHOULD be dealing with mathematics.
Some of them actually might be one person.
Duh.
Thus the newsgroups should make sure that a unique person is using the
media.
Why? What will that change?
I personally do not respond (now) to short or unknown form or number
names.
You said that last time. Replying to my previous post
proves you're a liar. Why shouldn't we assume you're
lying now?
I may sometimes use M.Basti for my name, but upon registration I wrote
Mehran Basti and appears in some newsgroups. It is a unique name.
And how do we know it's the same person?
How do we know some troll hasn't created a Yahoo
e-mail account with the same name? Signing your
name proves nothing.
