Tomoko has said that a certain phrase should be an accepted part of
mathematics. Joe Blow's response isn't really controversial: if you
can't define (or give axioms for) such a phrase, it is a useless idea.
I wont argue that - Joe Blow has every right to expect a
justification.
As an aside - somewhere in the back of my mind I am hearing the ghosts
of those who invented random variables in the first place, 90 years
ago, who no doubt wrestled with these same issues.
My first response to Joe is this:
Every mathematical truth is given with %100 certainty that it jives
with the rest of mathematics. A certainty of %100 is an artifact of
probability theory, and so you can see that these considerations are
indeed at work whether you acknowledge them or not.
It is not so radical to define a line where all of the points in the
line exist with probability 1, except for say irrational values which
are given as existing with probability 1/2. Easy to visualize such a
thing. No, I didnt use random variables.
If Joe can find a contradiction...that would be helpful.
