Hey, don't sell yourself or others short.
Perhaps with the cranks and wingnuts in here including your current
topic of discussion, if one declares oneself a good or great
mathematician, then I'm sure that person isn't.
I don't think _anyone_ should _ever_ declare oneself a
great mathematician (or a great _anything_ for that matter) --
rather let others call them that if it's really so. Saying it
oneself, _even if true_, has an air of arrogance and egotism
around it that just can't be gotten around. (not to mention
it can reinforce/boost one's own arrogance/egotism a little.)
Humility is something that seems be rare in this corrupted
world.
Nor do I think one should declare oneself a poor <whatever>
either, as then one is just degrading oneself and that can
actually impede one's progress.
It doesn't matter whether the group is full of crackpottery
or not -- to me it's just not a good thing to do, anywhere,
ever.
the like. But, alas, those days are gone (and I am not so self-assured),
What song is that from? It's on the tip of my brain, but not
registering.
so the only opinions you'll get will be from "seconds couteaux" (small

Again, don't sell yourself or others short.
(but I still suspect "we", second fiddles, still know
enough music to be correct in assessing it will stay a minor curiosity)
Has the abuse you received here diminished your self-esteem?
Why do you even carry out such abuse, anyway, if it's just that,
abuse, it's WRONG, and 2 wrongs do not equal a right?
