Imho, if it's not your second nature to do exactly that, mathematician is not the right job for you.
Suppose you talk to your plumber or tv repairman with terms that are not the exact ones that he learned at school. How would you react if he refuses to help you, based on that argument? It's -his- job to try to make sense of your stuttering utterances.
