Didn't Fermi have a big safe on a rope whose purpose was to swing
down and smash the reactor if the reaction got uncontrolled?

Is that the kind of "science" we're dealing with here?

Weren't there concerns that the first H-bomb might start
an uncontrolled chain reaction in the atmosphere and destroy
the Earth?

Some of the scientists had feared that the temperature of the bomb may
start the oxidation of nitrogen, e.g. N2 + O2 -> 2 NO, in such an
extend, that this reaction may go on to burn the whole atmosphere.
Studying historical sources it seems, they hasn't been sure that this
armageddon wouldn't happen.



How did they resolve that? By trying it?

It's a sad fact that "science" is replete with such nonsense.
Maybe the anti-science trolls are just taking advantage of
that fact, but it certainly doesn't help when dumb-asses
like Dr. Ivan D. Reid try to dismiss legitimate concerns.

They have a responsibility to explain why such concerns are
deemed unnecessary and not simple shout "get real".
