My take on it is that they like to support ideas that appear to
present disproofs of, or at least alternatives to, the standard
theories, (often decried as "accepted dogma").
the disproofs part is intellectually dishonest
if "they" is supposed to include me
but so is this association of "save-the-ass"
particularly with the list presented
the points i have made are about well defined formalisms
and the psychology of those who
not being aware of these fields
dogmatically attack as foolish or naive
it is something i have had to deal with quite a bit
and so now i tend to stand up against such belittlements
Granted, it would be most notable if someone did turn up a
problem with the standard theories, but that seems increasing
unlikely, given the (lack of) depth of the arguments given so far.
semantic issues of meaning have been brought up at times
but that's not the point here
LWalker, on the other hand, takes an interest in supporting
and expanding on alternative views apparently because he's
interested in non-standard theories, and thinks that useful
(or at least interesting) insight can come from these efforts.
That's fine as an intellectual exercise. The problem is that his
source of ideas is not the best font to draw from. Non-standard
ideas are all well and good within the proper context, but latching
on to every crank notion that graces sci.math is probably not the
most efficient way to proceed.
labelling things crank and not considering them
has shown itself not a very efficient way of proceeding as well
particularly when quite wrong
(as is common)
