Actually it is NEAR the minimum. I'd have more respect for your
objectivity if you had found the minimum and checked it.
Try v=-1.
Me: The minimum of what? You know I have asked at least three times over the last week for a statement of which function is to be minimized.
I have long ago tried varies values including v = -1. Since any factorisation occurs only when v * f_2 + 1 is a multiple of a factor then for v = -1 to work then f_2 - 1 would have to be a factor. Since f_2 is a factor of D-1 it is unlikely that f_2 - 1 would be a factor of D and my trials have confirmed this.

It's easy math. I suspect you haven't picked it up because you don't
want to believe it.
Me: I have never claimed to be an especially good mathematician. I will be convinced if I can see the algorithm work. Unfortunately as it currently stands I am claiming that the algorithm is incomplete. I see what goes on here and I can understand your defensiveness. It would help if you could distinguish requests for assistance from attacks.
I am politely sceptical. That is nothing to do with you but my normal response to any unusual or far reaching claim. If it helps I don't trust my own judgement either.
JSH:
None of you need to convince me of anything and I'm trying to HELP
you. You cannot stop a simple solution to the factoring problem! So
it's not like I need to convince you of anything. I'd simply like to
do so because I feel somewhat sorry for you.
Me: Then HELP me. I'm not stopping you, you are. You have not published a complete solution. I really need to know the missing steps. For example
(1) I coded the algorithm as it is on your site.
(2) I was told I was wrong since I have to find the minimum of something.
(3) Now you are saying I have to be near the minimum, which is not the same thing.
I am concerned that there is more missing from my understanding that has not yet been published.
Perhaps if you spent half an hour publishing a worked through example of a number > 1000 with the calculus. I could reverse engineer from there.
You're new here, right? JSH has NEVER worked through an example of ANYTHING, in 10 years.
