TEASER
INT. NEW YORK MERCANTILE EXCHANGE - 1:27 PM
CAMERA GLIDES over the bustling COMMODITIES TRADING
FLOOR. Three
minutes to the closing bell. Some 1,500 people
packed into an area
about the size of a football field.
Masses of traders and brokers in bright colored
blazers swarm around
the various octagonal “pits” where different
commodities are traded.
Waving their tickets. Buy. Sell. Prices tick up
and down on a vast
ELECTRONIC BOARD.
INT. NYMEX - PRECIOUS METALS PITS - CONTINUOUS
Our view is transformed into that of a somewhat fuzzy
color security
camera. Among a throng of traders at the gold pit is
PATRICK BRICE,
late 20s. Buying like a madman.
PATRICK
Buying two hundred January Gold, 410! Buy! Buy!
1:29 (one minute to closing) the frenzy continues.
30 seconds. 15.
Finally, the closing bell rings.
The action dies down in a matter of seconds. The
floor quickly begins
to clear in a huge procession.
Patrick watches the crowd in silence for a moment as
it dissolves
around him. He smiles contentedly.
JACK (V.O.)
His name’s Patrick Brice. 27, single. A commodities
trader for New
Jersey-based Canary Capital Investments. Last seen
leaving the floor
of the New York Mercantile Exchange shortly after
1:30 PM on
Wednesday.
Patrick walks off the floor. A sea of discarded
trade slips at his
feet. As Patrick rejoins the procession, he begins
to FADE AWAY and
eventually VANISHES as if swallowed by the anonymity
of the crowd...
INT. NYMEX - TRADING FLOOR - 10 AM (44.5 HOURS
MISSING)
VIVIAN and DANNY question a clean cut TRADER. It’s
business as usual
on the exchange floor. Live trading. The Trader’s
preoccupied as
hell.
TRADER
Sure, I saw him. Tenacious little ***. Edged me
out of some good
bids.
(yelling to a broker)
210! 210! No higher.
(to Viv & Danny)
Sorry, what was your question?
VIVIAN
When did you last--
TRADER
(yelling to a broker)
No, no! 211! Done!
Vivian turns to Danny.
VIVIAN
I wonder if Jack’s having better luck than we are.
INT. NYMEX - OBSERVATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
Windows overlook the trading floor. The hustle and
bustle reduced to
a quiet din. JACK and SAMANTHA interview RICHARD
STERN, 55, CEO of
Canary Capital Investments. Stern has a tan that
almost looks natural
and a full head of dyed-black hair.
RICHARD
He wasn’t at work yesterday. And when we didn’t hear
from him last
night...
SAMANTHA
Mr. Stern, when was the last time you saw Patrick
Brice?
RICHARD
When he went off to the rings on Wednesday morning.
SAMANTHA
The rings?
RICHARD
(pointing)
The trading floor.
JACK
Did you notice anything strange about his behavior?
RICHARD
It was his first day alone out there, he was
understandably nervous.
But he’s a bright kid.
SAMANTHA
How long has Brice worked for you?
RICHARD
Eight or nine months, I got him fresh out of Wharton.
He was hungry,
eager to become a trader, but he didn’t mind paying
his dues first.
Rare trait in his generation.
JACK
Do you know anything about his life prior to Wharton?
RICHARD
Not really. He was on scholarship. Did a stint in
the Army before he
enrolled.
Jack. Reaching.
JACK
Is there anything else you can tell us about him?
Anything you think
might be helpful with our investigation?
A long, deliberate beat.
RICHARD
Well...he was sleeping with my wife.
Off Jack and Samantha’s reactions...

ACT ONE
INT. FBI OFFICES - COMMAND POST - 11 AM (45.5 HOURS
MISSING)
TIMELINE SHOT:
1:30 PM - Leaves Nymex.
Patrick Brice’s driver’s license photo goes up on the
board.
Samantha, Danny, Martin and Vivian debate.
VIVIAN
Brice’s first day at his new post. Worked hard to
get there. Company
adores him. There’s no reason for him to just walk
away.
DANNY
Here’s what doesn’t sit right with me: why would
Stern give up that
Brice was tapping his wife? Doesn’t he know that
makes him the prime
suspect in the guy’s disappearance?
MARTIN
What if that’s his angle? Draw suspicion away from
himself. A guilty
man would never admit that.
DANNY
Could be he’s just dumb.
VIVIAN
Or he’s trying to make us think he is.
Jack walks in.
JACK
And until we know more all of this is just
conjecture.
(beat)
Martin and Viv, go to Brice’s apartment and see what
you can see.
Vivian and Martin head out.
JACK (CONT'D)
Danny, you’ve got deep background.
Also, Stern claims he was at the Circa Tabac cigar
bar the night of
Brice’s disappearance. Find out if he’s telling the
truth.
DANNY
I’m on it.
Samantha looks to Jack.
SAMANTHA
Mrs. Stern?
JACK
I’ll drive.
INT. STERN’S PENTHOUSE APARTMENT - 12 PM
(46.5 HOURS
MISSING)
A posh upper west side affair. Windows offer a
to-die-for view of
Lincoln Center. Snowflakes float by gently outside.
Jack and Samantha sit with JULIA STERN. At 45 she’s
ten years her
husband’s junior, but between the plastic surgery and
the make-up
you’d be hard pressed to discern her age.
SAMANTHA
You were having an affair with Patrick Brice, is that
correct?
JULIA
I don’t know why you’re asking me, you already have
the answer.
JACK
Humor us.
JULIA
Yes I was having an affair with him. He’s young and
he’s handsome
and...
SAMANTHA
And?
JULIA
Suffice it to say he likes pleasing people.
JACK
Your husband seemed rather...at ease with the fact
that you’re
sleeping with another man.
JULIA
It’s just sex, Agent Malone.
JACK
So your husband has no problem with it?
Julia chortles unabashedly.
JULIA
Why would he? It was his idea.
OFFSCREEN: a tea kettle whistles. Julia stands and
moves into the
kitchen. Jack and Samantha share a quizzical look.
They follow.
INT. APARTMENT - KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS
Julia removes the kettle from the stove. Pours
steaming water into
five ivory teacups.
JULIA
Richard had prostate cancer a year ago. It left
him...unable to
perform. Pills didn’t help. But he loves me, and he
wanted me to be
happy.
SAMANTHA
Sounds like a hell of a guy.
JACK
How often did you see Patrick?
JULIA
Punctuality was one of his better traits.
(smiles)
Though I can’t say it was his best.
(beat; offers tea)
Chamomile?
JACK
No thank you. How often did you see him, Mrs. Stern?
JULIA
Tuesdays, Thursdays and every other Saturday.
SAMANTHA
So you saw him on the day before his disappearance?
JULIA
He came over at 8 o’clock as usual. But it was
different. Patrick
was different. He seemed...distracted by something.
INT. STERN APARTMENT - BEDROOM - 8:30 PM (DBD)
Patrick lays in bed with Julia. She caresses his
naked back as he
stares off into the distance.
JULIA
You okay?
PATRICK
Yeah. Big day tomorrow.
JULIA
You want to talk?
Patrick glares at her, mildly disgusted.
PATRICK
Why start now?
He pulls away, climbs out of bed. Throws on sweat
pants.
JULIA
See you Thursday?
Patrick eyes her. Offers the briefest, knowing
smile.
PATRICK
Yeah. See you Thursday.
INT. APARTMENT - KITCHEN - RESUMING
JULIA
And that was it. By last night the police had been
called. He was
gone.
(beat)
You’ll have to excuse me now. I’m expecting guests
shortly.
JACK
Of course. Thank you for your time.
Julia ushers them to the door. As they walk out,
Jack turns to her.
JACK (CONT'D)
Mrs. Stern, do you think it’s possible that your
husband was in any
way involved in Patrick Brice’s disappearance?
JULIA
No. Never. Richard loves me. He loves Patrick,
too, I think.
(beat)
We never had a son, you know.
We catch a hint of melancholy on Julia’s face as she
closes the door.
Samantha shakes her head.
SAMANTHA
One big happy family.
INT. ELEVATOR - MOMENTS LATER
Jack and Samantha ride down.
JACK
I don’t buy it. Tuesday, Thursday and every other
Saturday? That
isn’t the kind of thing a man can live with. Even if
Stern condoned
the affair, it had to be eating him up inside.
INT. LOBBY - MOMENTS LATER
Jack and Sam exit the elevator. Walk toward the
lobby entrance. A
cordial DOORMAN waves at them.
DOORMAN
Hey, you the ones looking for Mr. Brice?
SAMANTHA
You know him?
DOORMAN
Nah. I mean not really. He was a nice guy is all.
Good tipper.
Hope you find him.
JACK
How long have you worked here?
DOORMAN
Couple years. Why?
JACK
You ever notice Brice get into altercations with
anyone? Mr. Stern
maybe?
DOORMAN
No way. Like I said, Mr. Brice was a stand-up guy.
JACK
Thanks.
As Jack and Sam walk off...
JACK
Generous tipper and he takes care of his boss’s wife.
Who says
chivalry is dead?
INT. BRICE’S STUDIO APARTMENT - 12:30 PM (47 HOURS
MISSING)
A quaint, renovated prewar single. Spartan would be
an
understatement. Murphy bed, small gas range, coffee
table, dresser,
and closet. Vivian and Martin stand in the middle of
it all.
VIVIAN
Landlord says Brice always paid a month
