Blood work offers hope
Heart treatment therapy

Treating heart attack victims with their own blood has
University of Calgary medical experts looking for
volunteers who want to live longer, healthier lives.
Unveiling the North American Phase 3 of clinical trials
called ACCLAIM yesterday, U of C experts are drawing
blood from patients with chronic heart failure, running
it through a machine which heats and stresses it, and
then injects it back into the patient through a shot in
the buttocks.

The process is known as immune modulation therapy.

"This procedure targets chronic inflammation by kick-
starting the immune system's own anti-inflammatory
response," said Dr. Debra Isaac, U of C Faculty of
Medicine's associate clinical professor of cardiology.

"We cardiologists have come to recently understand that
inflammation plays a pivotal role in the development and
progression of heart failure."

Through the process in which about two teaspoons of blood
are exposed to heat, oxidation and UV light, the white
blood cells begin to die off.

Those dying cells then trigger an anti-inflammatory
reaction in the patient, causing his or her own body to
boost its own healing process.

"I'm hoping this will give us another tool in our battle
against heart disease," Isaac said.

Researchers need 30 heart patients to participate in the
study. They will be required to undergo a 20-minute
procedure once a month for two years.
