Presumably, considering the span of life back then, many of the adults
who left Egypt may not have survived the forty* years of wilderness
wandering.
* Another of those tricky things, since "forty" is commonly used as a
round number for "a lot" in the Bible, though translators aren't always
scrupulous about that, and some passages are ambiguous.

The written word, accurately construed, is a worthwhile starting place.
