Why are professionals/businesses afraid of e-mail?

Yesterday I saw a program on C-SPAN which discussed ways of lowering
medical costs. Of course they talked about lawsuit abuse. They also talked
about innovative ways of providing health care. One such way mentioned was
e-mail correspondence. The problem with that, a few attested, was fear of
being sued for, for example, telling a patient who has a headache to take
aspirin.

That is what I thought. I have noticed businesses are afraid to
communicate via e-mail. They are afraid to put what they have to say in
writing. That should be true, but it still sounds like a lame excuse to
me. Putting your words in writing helps communicate what you mean. If they
have a problem with responsibility, if they want to talk over the
telephone because they don't want to be held responsible for what they
say, then can't they just put disclaimers in their correspondence?

That and maybe being computer illiterate with no friends or family to
teach them and too set in their ways. But e-mail is pretty easy, isn't it?

I'm certainly not applying that to those who share ideas and offer help in
these text based discussion groups.
