It along with "viscous fibers" are the "active ingredients" for
cholesterol-lowering.

Correct. Again, my problem with this dietary approach to lower
cholesterol is the potential for promoting weight gain. This would be a
serious drawback:

Not if the "diets" advocate a change in what people are eating rather
than a decrease in the amount that they are eating.

But I believe it is a problem.

And which studies are these that show a low-fat high plant fiber diet
helps people with *sustained* weight loss?

Correct. The lowering of cholesterol through permanent lifestyle
changes is preferable to medications.

That would not be one of the reasons I would give. There has not been
any reason to believe that cholesterol lowering medications promote
obesity.

Yes, a low-fat high viscous fiber diet is believed to lower risk of
developing certain cancers especially colon adenocarcinoma and possibly
even prostate and breast cancer.

That benefit may be offset by the weight gain that occurs over time.
