Magnesium carbonate will mess up the pH balance (even if it buffered so the
pH is 7.4, it will still increase the buffering ability of the blood, which
you probably don't want to do acutely). So chances are it is not used IV for
this reason. It also binds phosphate, which the body needs to make ATP.
I would think the magnesium carbonate is used only orally, like for antacids
or bowel cleaning regiments. But the formulation is usually magnesium
citrate for bowel cleaning.
