sorry...you must have misunderstood my intent..
YOUR sentence read "I am constantly amazed that medical folks design a drug
for ONE symptom,,,than after a large population try it "claim" it is good
for something else...
precisely describes serendipity.... by your own definition,,serendipity is
defined as "accidentality"...
in the beta blocker example I used....beta blockers were designed for
cardiac symptoms...and tested for such...in the clinical
trials..voila...headache folks (like me BTW) noticed a distinct improvment
in headache frequency and intensity...
thus those us taking betas for cardiac reasons BECAME the petri dishes!!!
it worked for an indication that it was not designed for..in my case..I take
betas for palpitations...so in essence I can Kill two stones with one
bird(my brother's favorite misonmer)
I cannot understand why this is a problem...
during clinical trials..and we are talking 3 decades or so ago....beta
blockers showed improvement in headaches EVEN for those not helped by its
cardiac "intended" properties..
should pharma gone back to the drawing board and disregard the facts that
betas helped headaches??
not in my book...firstly...once a drug is FDA approved...it can be used
"offlabel" for any purpose that a prescriber feels it might help...betas for
many years ARE FDA approved for headache prevention...and that indication is
listed in the PDR
