The diagnostic workup of high cholesterol and the diagnostic workup of high
blood pressure are different.
Everybody has a complete workup when diagnosed with high blood pressure.
Essential hypertension implies no known cause.
No one doubts that sodium which is absorbed through aldosterone is somehow
involved in some cases. In others Calcium exertion on blood vessel
constriction or through age related isolated systolic hypertension as a
result of reduced elasticity of blood vessels.
They tell everybody to avoid sodium and some people like diabetics are more
sensitive to sodium's effects on blood pressure.
Typically as sodium is absorbed through the renal action of aldosterone then
potassium is lost. One ends up with a high blood sodium and a low blood
potassium level. The increase in sodium leads to water retention and thus
high blood pressure.
Diuretics act by excreting the sodium and the water follows with a decrease
in blood pressure.
In short all medications act on known mechanisms of blood pressure
regulation.
Malignant hypertension or hypertension associated with other diseases like
pheochromocytoma or renal failure that can kill you are important in ruling
out any new cases of hypertension.
All symptoms and the rapidity of onset is important.
They usually do a complete chemistry panel with urinalysis and an EKG to
check for things like left sided hypertrophy as a diagnostic workup
depending on symptomatology for hypertension.

The most common cause of lipemia of blood is diabetes.
The insulin resistance causes lipid alternations. Hypothyroidism and alcohol
are other causes that can be seen in blood parameters.
