It's a very important point. Some folk here argue that taking statins
long term can have damaging side effects for some people. Others argue
that the benefits in terms of reduced risk of death for most is worth
the possible slight risk of adverse effects for a small minority.

This study suggests that for the reduction in risk of death you might
not have to take the statin all the time. Maybe taking it all the time
is just a rather costly way of ensuring that you've taken some on the
day the problem happens.

A number of scientists have suggested that the way statins benefit
those at risk of MI is not the obvious cholesterol-reducing rationale
but something else we don't yet understand. This is another useful
pointer in that direction.
