Drug breakthrough in blood pressure

DOCTORS will review the treatment of high blood pressure after a
combination of new drugs was found to be 50per cent better at preventing
heart attacks than existing treatments.
The finding could have implications for more than 3million Australians
who suffer high blood pressure which puts them at risk of heart attacks
or strokes.
A five-year trial conducted at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Sweden
found substantially fewer deaths among patients taking the newer drugs.
Researchers released the findings yesterday at the European Society of
Cardiology conference in Stockholm, prompting doctors to recommend an
immediate review of existing blood pressure treatments.
"There was a highly significant improvement found with the newer drugs,
so it will lead to changes in treatment," said Leeanne Grigg, director
of cardiology at Royal Melbourne Hospital. "I think we'll still use the
older drugs for now but we'll start to move patients on to the newer
drugs."
The trial participants, aged 40 to 79, had high blood pressure plus at
least three other risk factors for cardiovascular disease including
diabetes, high cholesterol and a family history of heart problems.
The study recorded 24per cent fewer heart-related deaths among those
taking the newer amlodipine combination, 23per cent less strokes and
30per cent fewer new cases of diabetes.
