"What doctors have done, essentially, is eliminate the need to cut open
the chest to sew in a new valve. Instead, they mounted a new valve on a
stent, made a small incision in Elizabeth's leg and then threaded the
contraption up through an artery into the heart with a catheter (a
guide wire). Using a tiny balloon -- the same kind used in angioplasty
-- the stent is opened and, presto, a new valve is in place. For the
first time in her life, Elizabeth has a perfectly functioning pulmonary
valve that prevents blood from flowing back into the heart after it has
been pumped toward the lungs."
