Vertigo and High Cholesterol

A (postmenopausal) friend suffers from severe bouts of vertigo in
certain situations--in shopping centers, these new large superstores,
and basically anywhere except home and the out of doors.

She has stayed away from statins until this past weekend, when someone
told her high cholesterol causes loss of blood flow to the brain, which
brings on the vertigo. She has stayed away from statins because she
suffers from lifelong GI problems, most notably chronic constipation
and irritable bowel syndrome.

She is not responding well to the Lipitor and is convinced she will be
having a stroke soon if she does not find *some* medication to deal
with the sluggish blood flow to her brain!

Can a combination of Niacin and fish-oil supplements approach the
effectiveness of statins, or should my friend just sit and wait to have
a stroke?

Thank you.
