Synchronized cardioversion

Hello, everyone.
I have a question about the workings of a synchronized cardioverter. I
know that shocks are automatically delivered a short period of time
after the R wave of the heart is detected. But how exactly is the R
wave detected? Does the machine detect it as it occurs using the slope
and amplitude of the ECG signal? Does it predict when the next R wave
is due to occur by determining the approximate frequency of R waves up
to that moment? Or is the correct answer something else entirely?

If anyone knows the answer, I would be very grateful for it.
